Tired as hell but work to be done
June 28th, 2008 AbrahamI’m ready to pass out, but the weird part about it is I woke up at 10PM after a 2 day workathon. Anyone else up this late? 5AM here. :/
I’m ready to pass out, but the weird part about it is I woke up at 10PM after a 2 day workathon. Anyone else up this late? 5AM here. :/
It’s been FOREVER since I’ve played. I’ve had CS source installed for I can’t even remember how long now. I’ve been so focused on work lately that I really didn’t take any breaks so the other day I loaded it up and fuck. What a relief. Taking short breaks throughout the day to play is actually helping me work better it turns out. I guess my brain just needs a break here and there. I also went to the park and realized how damned out of shape I am. I used to be able to do about 40 pushups on a decline from a desk (standard desk, about 3 feet up or so) and I tried doing about 10 off of a regular picnic bench and holy shit I was feeling it. I’ve got about another 50 pounds to lose or so, yeah I’m a fatass. I’ll get there, I hope. Lately life just seems so shitty. Oh well I guess things will happen the way they’re meant to.
Everything’s changed, well for the most part. Read the text in the image above to understand more what about. I’ll be posting here more often now, a mixture of adult stuff (because hey I’m a guy and I enjoy it so I share with readers of my blog) and tech stuff (because hey technology is sexy). Enjoy one or the other, both at the same time, or alternate for maximum pleasure. I’ll be back later, time to get some work done.
Eh, it’s 10AM and I felt like posting. A lot of HUGE changes are going to be happening around here very shortly, so stay tuned. One of the biggest changes is the fading out of the blogs hosted on the UNIX-Fu network for various reasons. One of them being I finally had some time to audit the activities going on, seems people abused their privileges. I’ve set up a 410 on most of them, removing ‘em by handfuls. 410 tells the visiting person “this content is not here anyone”. The whole network is changing, brand new face, everything. Time for me to excersize my unix-fu and kick this network back into shape like it used to be.
So raise your hands if you’ve never visited an adult site……exactly. We all know and (I guess love?) porn sites from time to time. What really amazes me is the fact that a large bulk of some of the biggest adult sites out there on the web are hosted on systems using completely free software. This is about the point where I give the Apache foundation some credit, because statistics show that most of these sites are being powered by their webserver software. How about MySQL? Yep, them too.
Let’s put this in perspective for a moment. Most of the time when something is free, that old saying “you get what you pay for” really does apply. The reason? The craftsmanship and love and devotion isn’t neccessarily always put into that product you’re receiving for free. Let’s take a toy car for example that “Some Company” gives away to kids for free. A week later, that toy breaks. Ok maybe that’s a bad analogy but maybe not. It made sense in my head when I was thinking about this all. Anyway, Apache is provided free to the public. Yet a week later, it won’t break. OK?!
Apache is one of the most beautiful pieces of free webserving software on the market today, if not the webserving market in general in my opinion. I’ve had the opportunity to speak with some of the larger adult sites out there’s owners and asked them what they were running and how performance was in general on their servers. Another site running the apache software for it’s adult environment is XXX Porn, and they love it. The first site owner I spoke to was Louie from Louie’s Free Porn (link: Louie’s Free Porn). He’s a nice enough guy, really down to earth. He just runs a site as a hobby to share free porn with the rest of the internet world. I asked him what he was running on his systems, how it all came to be and how overall performance was. His answers below:
UNIX-Fu: What software does Louie’s Free Porn run on?
Louie: Apache and MySQL really and that’s about it. The fact that our host created a cluster out of our site so it would run even faster was pretty cool too. I don’t know a lot about technical stuff, I work construction as my day job but I do know about porn and where to find it free LOL! If you want finer details I can ask my hosting company for it, but they told me it was just Apache and MySQL for the database stuff.
UNIX-Fu: How did Louie’s Free Porn even come to be?
Louie: To be honest really, I was a bit of a site surfer for a long time when I’d come home late at night after my job over here in NYC working construction, building demolition, reconstruction and repairs, etc. One day I got tired of all the sites I was visiting with their damned popup windows, links that went to different places under the disguise of free porn, and just a bunch of ripoff sites. I decided to create a site of my own where other people like me could get porn for free and not have to worry about all of that stuff. So today there’s “Louie’s Free Porn” and that’s exactly what it all is, free. Sometimes I’ll post tips for other people to get it for a buck or how to avoid having their credit cards billed and stuff over and over and hopefully it helps a lot of people.
UNIX-Fu: So how many hits do you get every day roughly? How do the servers hold up?
Louie: Well we get about a million or so hits a day. It all really depends on the day some days more than others. I’m just happy to see it grow and people enjoying the stuff I find out there through all of the guises of free porn when it’s really not. I make sure my friends visiting my site don’t have to worry about all of that. The servers hold up great thanks to my host. These guys are great and really are probably one of the best web hosts I have had in a really long time. Basically thanks to them and Apache, the site’s usually smooth as butter. Never have to worry about downtime and stuff like that.
UNIX-Fu: What are your future plans for Louie’s Free Porn?
Louie: I just created a “porn tube” type of site where I upload movies for everyone else to watch so that’s probably the latest in news for me. It’s a pretty cool site, I enjoy watching the movies myself LOL so I hope others enjoy ‘em too. You can check out it out Louie’s Tube.
UNIX-Fu: Wow, that must really beat up the servers with all of those hits and bandwidth and all huh?
Louie: Well like I said it’s really smooth. The servers are up all of the time thanks to my host and Apache and I never have really had any issues with ‘em.
UNIX-Fu: Thanks for taking the time to speak with us, it’s great to hear back from the community that’s actually utilizing the free software out there on websites that actually test the abilities of the software and push its envelope. I think that about concludes our interview. Are there any other sites out there you’d like to plug? We’d be more than happy to let you since you were so kind to take the time out of your day to interview with us.
Louie: Nah it was my pleasure, but sure. A friend of mine just created her own site and it’s pretty wild. If you’re into lesbian porn and such you’ll like it. A lot of really pretty girls on there. Her site is Lesbian Porn Movies and she updates every day. Great stuff. Thanks for the plug!
UNIX-Fu: Anytime Louie, thanks for your time!
Louie: You got it, take it easy!
So there you have it. A “real world” example of the free software the wonderful people over at Apache have created being used. We’ll be interviewing other site owners in the future as we can find ‘em. I might make this a project to track the stability of the software over a period of time to see how well things hold up. You can never be too precise! I’m out of here for now, take it easy folks! If you’d like to see more interviews, rate this post as high as you can. The more votes, the more liklihood of more interviews in the future.

It’s come to my attention that some users are syndicating from other people’s feeds to create their content. This is perfectly fine! That’s what RSS was made for! However, it seems that some authors don’t agree with it. I did notice however that the users doing this DID include a link back to the originating author’s post and site. They weren’t hyperlinked, but the FULL url to the articles are being posted below it, giving the author credit. While everyone’s opinion differs (I have my posts syndicated from other blogs of mine daily and I love the extra publicity to the sites of mine they originate from), please if you’re an author of a post or posts from a blog of which a UNIX-Fu user has syndicated, contact abuse@prohosted.net and we’ll take down the offending posts for you.
Have a good one!

Heh, well it seems like a lot more people know about unix-fu and spread the word around. I must be getting 500 emails a day now asking about free blog hosting. “Do you offer it?” “Do you provide it?” The original answer was “just to friends right now”, but I’m falling back into the old unix-fu ways and the answer is “Yep, no problem just keep it clean.”. So shortly I should have a signup form for free blog hosting. Just do me a favor, nothing illegal, nothing copywritten, etc. I’ll get that up there in a bit and you can start enjoying blogging as I am. The only stipulation is the top banner ad and the bottom banner ad are kept to unix-fu to help support hosting it.
Here’s a useful command if you’re trying to make sure your Linux kernel has all of the support you need it to. I’ve been in the middle of editing a kernel before and realized I wasn’t sure of my wireless card chipset before etc. and it’s really handy.
Type this on the commandline:
/sbin/lspci -vv
Welp, it’s been a LONG time but finally unix-fu.org is back online. Some of you might remember it as a free web hosting site, some of you may be new to the site in general. Either way, it’s here and it’s here for good this time. A little history on the old UNIX-Fu:
1. It was created in in June 2000 by me, the reason being I was tired of other free hosting companies that somehow screwed with their “clients” or stuck ridiculous banners all over the place.
2. It was a free hosting service
3. It offered up documentation which at the time was up-to-date on unix-related topics and so forth
What UNIX-Fu will be now:
1. Basically a collection of anything and everything that comes into my mind
2. Free blog hosting for some friends of mine relating to various topics
3. Tutorials, How-To’s, etc. and tips when I come across them to help system administrators out or just folks new to the UNIX environment
Now one thing I have to set straight, is that when I use the term “UNIX”, it relates to any variant or flavor. Example of a variant: BSD. Example of a flavor: linux. People have always called Linux UNIX, or anything that was even related to a similar environment UNIX. Years ago I was such a nut I’d care. These days I don’t really to be honest. Whatever works for you, works for you. The ONLY time there’s an issue really if you think about it is either if you’re holding a conversation with a UNIX zealot, or applying for a job where the interviewer actually knows what the hell they’re talking about.
I could go on and on, but I’m not going to. It’s nearly 4am and I just can’t sleep and I’m in a pretty moody state. Either way, we’re here and we’re not going anywhere. I lost touch with things when I went from tech to corp and now I’m back where I belong. I’ll be posting some random stuff here which may or may not be related to technology, but for the most part it will. I’m also an avid poker player, car nut and various other hobbies. Enjoy your time here, and thanks for visiting. See ya soon.
